Lawton Ave
When old meets New
Situated in a Blue Chip area and surrounded by existing Heritage Buildings, we had to ensure this building had a new lease of life while retaining its Heritage appeal. The before and after images show the value of retaining heritage while also adding a modernised living arrangement. With the existing double hipped roof, we ensured the new roof was well drained and had plenty of downpipes to allow for the water to escape. The site was North to the street and the existing rear extension was dark and unappealing. By creating an outdoor area between the old and new and moving the new building to the eastern boundary we were able to let more Northern light in.
From a dark and narrow passage and living area, we managed to accomplish a large light filled entry, a wide hallway and a living room with a brilliant Northern aspect. Removing the old laundry, kitchen and living area and providing a new modern extension with high ceilings, floor to ceiling glazing, white walls and brilliant carpentry, has left this house bright and breezy. The builder was included at the early stages so that we were able to provide a well worked design. The cabinet maker has included curved edges to bench tops and these are well matched with curved bulkheads and a curved concrete hearth. The clients are loving their new makeover and even stated that they put central heating in but don't use it as they are getting more natural lighting and heating now.
